A modern poet
Je cherchais un prétexte pour vous parler de Grand Corps Malade. Alors oui il sort de 3 représentations à l’Olympia avec plein d’invités (je remercie Coline mon envoyée spéciale sur place !) et son deuxième film co-réalisé avec Medhi Idir La vie scolaire est toujours en salle en France et fait un carton. Malheureusement je n’ai pas eu la chance de profiter de ces 2 évènements depuis la Californie. Mais cet artiste, qui touche à la musique, à la littérature et au cinéma est une des constantes qui m’entourent depuis plusieurs années maintenant.
Grand Corps Malade, Fabien Marsaud de son vrai nom, ne chante pas (quoi que ça commence), il slamme. Le slam est une discipline que – je dois bien l’avouer – je ne connais qu’à travers lui. Le slam est l’art de proclamer des textes poétiques. Normalement le slam se fait sans accompagnement musical, Grand corps malade a pris le parti d’être accompagné par des mélodies absolument magnifiques. Je pense que c’est ce qui l’a aidé à pouvoir faire connaître ses textes et son art au grand public.
Comme beaucoup de monde, j’ai découvert Grand Corps Malade grâce à ses Voyages en train. Cette magnifique métaphore filée sur les histoires d’amours qui seraient comme des voyages en train a attiré l’attention de beaucoup de français. Depuis, même si j’aime toujours beaucoup ce texte, il a été surpassé par tellement d’autres. Ce que j’aime dans l’oeuvre musicale de Grand Corps malade c’est non seulement la justesse de ses mots mais aussi le fait qu’il se soit si bien entouré. Les compositions qui accompagnent ses textes sont magnifiques et subliment ses mots.
J’avoue qu’en commençant cet article je ne savais pas vraiment par quoi commencer. Il y a tellement de textes que je voudrai citer. Tellement de vers dans la discographie de Grand Corps Malade qui font mouche.

Grand corps malade a pris ce nom de scène en référence à son handicap qui résulte d’un accident qui l’a laissé tétraplégique incomplet. Il marche de nouveau à l’aide d’une béquille mais cet ancien basketteur qui se destinait à devenir prof de sport revient de loin. Il raconte – non sans humour – son expérience en centre de rééducation dans son livre Patients qui a ensuite été adapté au cinéma. C’est avec Mehdi Idir, le réalisateur de ses clips, que Grand Corps Malade a réalisé ce premier film. On retrouve que ce soit dans son livre ou dans son film, la même écriture aiguisée qui caractérise ses textes. De la répartie, des vannes… ce film est un bijou de verve et d’espoir. Les acteurs, pour la plupart inconnus ou presque au moment de la sortie du film sont prodigieux, Pablo Pauly qui joue le rôle de principal en premier. Si le thème du film et le fait que ce soit un premier film ont pu effrayé le public initialement je crois qu’il mérite amplement d’être découvert maintenant que vous avez ma recommandation ! J’ai pour ma part hâte de découvrir la Vie Scolaire. Grand Corps Malade je m’adresse à vous: vraiment on peut envisager une présence aux US ? au moins sur Netflix ? s’il vous plait ?!
Pour ceux qui veulent découvrir sa musique, il vient de sortir le mois dernier un best of. Vous n’y trouverez pas toutes mes chansons préférées mais presque !
I was looking for a pretext to talk to you about Grand Corps Malade. Yes he just did 3 concerts at the Olympia Music Hall in Paris with a lot of guests (Thanks to Coline my reporter on site !) and his second feature film that he co-directed with Medhi Idir La vie scolaire (that we could translate by “School life”) is still in theaters in France and is a big hit. Unfortunately I have not been able to enjoy any of these from California. But this artist, who works in music, in films and even wrote a book, has been constantly by my side these last few years.
Grand Corps Malade , his real name is Fabien Marsaud, does not sing (even though he is starting to), he slams. I have to admit that I only know slams through him. Slam is the art of proclaiming poetic texts. Usually, slam stands on its own without any musical arrangement to accompany the raw text. Grand Corps Malade chose to accompany his texts with beautiful melodies. I really think this choice helped him to get his texts out there and reach a large audience.
As many people in France, I discovered Grand Corps Malade thanks to his song Voyages en train(literally “Train rides”). This song is a beautiful metaphor on love stories that are like train rides and brought a lot of attention in France. Since then, even though I still love this text it has been surpassed by so many more. What I love in Grand Corps Malade’s musical pieces is not only the precision and pertinence of his lyrics but also that he was able to be surrounded by so many wonderful musicians. The musics that accompany his texts are gorgeous and make his words sublime.
I have to confess that starting this article I really did not know where to begin. There are so many wonderful lyrics from Grand Corps Malade that I would like to quote. So many verses in his discography that hit home for me.
So here is a compilation of quotes from several of his songs in a rough translation that really does not do the original lyrics justice, but it is the only way for me to make you discover these texts if you are not speaking a word of French. Grand Corps Malade (literally “Big sick body”) took this stage name in reference to his disability from an accident that left him (not completely) tetraplegic. He walks again now with a stick but this former basketball player who wanted to become a sports teacher did made a wonderful recovery. He tells – with a lot of humor – his experience in a rehabilitation center in his book Patients which was adapted to the big screen. It is with Medhi Idir, his music videos director, that he co-directed this first feature film. His book and his movie Patients are both filled with the same sharp writing that we can find in his songs lyrics. Quick witted dialogs, jibes… this movie is a gem filled with verve and hope. The actors, most of them were not well known at the time, are all wonderful, particularly Pablo Pauly who plays the main character. If the theme of this movie and the fact that it was the first feature film for both directors could have scared away part of the audience, I really think it deserves to be seen now that you have my seal of approval ! On my side I am really looking forward to see their second movie la Vie Scolaire. Grand corps Malade here is a question for you: can we hope for a US release ? even on Netflix ? Pretty please?!
